Site conditions Before installing any carpet you must observe the following: – Check for position and depth of any cables, water pipes and underfloor trunking. Ascertain final position of electrical floor sockets and any power outlets. – The sub-floor should be sound, level, dry and free of any contaminants. – Check if any damp-proof membrane exists. – In line with BS5325 new concrete sub floors should not have readings in excess of 75 % relative humidity prior to adhesion of textile flooring, however all ege products may be installed with readings up to 90 % relative humidity when using ege’s 90 % RH adhesive. – All underfloor heating must be turned off and any drying aids removed. – All carpets must be acclimatised to the atmospheric conditions that are expected to prevail after installation. This will allow the pile to recover and release roll tension. – Installation should be carried out in a room temperature of not less than 18° C. (Fig. 1) Always cut in from both adjoining edges when matching carpet. Cut through plain or field area whenever possible – These installation instructions should be read in conjunction with BS 5325, Code of Practice for Installation of Textile Floorcoverings. PLANNING Modern patterned tufted carpets are manufactured to exacting standards and installation problems are very rarely encountered when correct procedures are followed: the ‘view before you glue’ principle. Never cut or glue any of the carpet until it has been dry laid and the correct pattern matching established. Remember that the pattern match may be much greater than the ‘traditional’ 1 metre or less. Seams should be consistent, with clear understanding by all parties as to their number and layout. They should be kept to a minimum wherever possible, with careful consideration given to their position. (See the ‘Installation’ section for more details.) Seams and cross joins should be placed away from areas of heavy wear and traffic inclusive castor chair, where possible. Make sure that traffic flow will be along rather than across seams and that the seams run the length of the area. Check that excessive lighting will not enhance seams. MATCHING To create the perfect pattern match it is essential that some simple, basic guidelines are followed. Patterned tufted carpets can be easily installed in register providing the correct pre-installation care is taken. Before applying any adhesive follow these procedures. If the slightest doubt arises, consult the contract manager or a manufacturer’s representative before starting the installation. It is always advisable to check the material when it is first delivered. This will in many cases allow for any errors to be rectified in advance of the site start date. When installing multi-widths it is essential that carpet is not adhered to the floor before all pattern lines are correct. Joins must be made and matched before pieces are adhered across the full width. Machine edge
